AI is great at sounding sure. Wedge re-opens every page it cites and checks the quote is really there. Made-up quotes get caught before they reach your report.

✓ VerifiedApp Store review
“Now it only lets me make 10 invoices a month or I have to upgrade for another 300$ to the unlimited.”
Re-opened the source, quote matched.
✕ Not foundIllustrative example
“Every plumber I know would happily pay $40 a month for this.”
The kind of convenient line an AI might invent. It's flagged and can't affect the verdict.
  • Two sources per claim

A claim needs two checked sources from different pages, or it's labeled unverified.

  • A critic that argues back

A second pass tries to kill the top idea before it's ranked: who tried and failed, free rivals, people who complain but won't pay.

  • No API keys

Free sources only: Reddit, Hacker News, App Store reviews, GitHub issues, pricing pages and web search.

Why not just
ask an AI?

Same question, two very different answers. On the left is the pattern most AI chats follow. On the right is what Wedge produced for the invoicing app idea.

A plain AI chat

“Is a simpler invoicing app for tradespeople a good idea?”

  • “Great idea!” Almost every idea gets encouragement
  • Market-size numbers with no source you can check
  • A feature list every competitor already has
  • Guesses about what customers want
  • No idea who else is already building it
  • Ends with “good luck!” and no next step

Wedge

Verdict: PIVOT 66/100

  • Honest verdict, with the narrower version that could work
  • 28 real customer quotes, each checked against its source
  • Real prices from competitors' own pricing pages
  • Ranked complaints: invoice caps, price hikes, bloat
  • Found several small apps already chasing the same idea
  • A 7-day test with a pass bar, and when to walk away

Start
wherever you are.

Four ways in. Choose quick (about 10 minutes) or deep (the full run).

  • From scratch

“Find me a business I can start.”

Five quick questions about your budget, skills and time, then niches with real demand that fit you.

  • From what you know

“I’m a dental hygienist. What could I build?”

Starts from your industry and the access you already have.

  • Stress-test an idea

“Is a dog-walking app for apartment buildings any good?”

Your idea against real complaints and real competitors. It will tell you to walk away if it should.

  • Beat my competitors

“How do I take customers from Jobber?”

For a business you already run: when customers leave them, and how to be there.

How a run
works.

Ten stages in four steps. Progress is saved as it goes, so you can stop and pick it up later, even in a different agent.

  1. 1

    Research

Asks about you, finds niches, maps competitors with real prices, and reads hundreds of reviews and complaint threads.

  2. 2

    Decide

Scores each opportunity on six factors with the reasoning shown, then a critic tries to kill the winner. Verdict: GO, PIVOT or KILL.

  3. 3

    Win

Turns competitor weaknesses into a plan: when customers switch, what to offer them, where to find them, and what to build first.

  4. 4

    Prove

Checks every quote, then writes one shareable report, a launch kit with a 7-day test, and a share image.

GO PIVOT KILL

Honest verdicts. It will tell you to pivot or walk away, and show why.

Eight skills, one install. Run the whole pipeline, or just the piece you need.

    A real run.
    Unedited.

The idea: a simpler invoicing app for solo tradespeople. Quick mode, 28 quotes from App Store reviews, Reddit and pricing pages. All 28 checked out against their sources.

    PIVOT
    66/100

The complaints are real: monthly invoice caps, price hikes right after subscribing, paying $25 a month to send PDFs. But several small developers are already building the generic version. Build the narrow one.

    The gap it found

Solo tradespeople can't get an app that just lets them invoice from the truck, because every option either caps how many they can send, raises the price after they subscribe, or buries invoicing in a $59+/month suite.

    How to win

“Unlimited quotes and invoices for one-person trade businesses. One price that never goes up, and it works with no signal.”

    What customers said

“Context: I keep hearing from solo plumbers/electricians/HVAC techs that Jobber and Housecall Pro are too expensive and too complicated for one person, and ServiceTitan is completely out of reach.”
    ✓ Verified r/smallbusiness
“QuickBooks is solid for the accounting side but overkill if you just need quote-to-invoice.”
    ✓ Verified r/handyman

    Not just what to build.
    How to win.

A gap only matters if you can get customers through it. The win plan turns competitor weaknesses into moves you can make this week.

    • Switching moments

When people leave: a price hike, a new limit, a bad update. Each one backed by quotes.

    • Positioning in their words

Lifted from the complaints themselves, not a brainstorm.

    • Offers that pull switchers

Free import, locked prices, no contracts: whatever removes their reason to stay.

    • Where they hang out

The specific communities and review pages where unhappy customers already talk.

    • Ready-to-edit drafts

A comparison page, outreach messages, ad copy and an FAQ.

    • A monthly check-in

Re-checks competitors for new complaints, price changes and new rivals.

    Install in

No accounts, no API keys. Needs Python 3, which Macs and most Linux machines already have.

Installs every skill into the agents on your machine. Needs Node.js 22 or newer; on older versions use the Script tab.

    Then ask your agent

“Use wedge to find me a business I can start with $500 and 10 hours a week.”

    Questions
    and answers.

    Is it free?

Yes. Wedge is open source under the MIT license, needs no API keys and uses only free data sources. The only cost is your agent's own usage.

Which agents does it work with?

Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, and any agent that reads SKILL.md files.

    Can it make things up?

It can try, but it won't get far. Every quote is re-checked against its source. Anything that can't be confirmed is labeled, and unconfirmed claims can't drive the verdict.

Does it scrape sites like G2 or Capterra?

No. Those only come in through ordinary web search results, which respects their terms. Direct sources are Reddit, Hacker News, App Store reviews, GitHub issues and public pricing pages.

How long does a run take?

Quick mode takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Our timed deep run took 29 minutes: it scouted 7 niches, read over 1,400 pages and checked 78 quotes. You can stop and resume any run.

Can it help a business I already run?

Yes. "Beat my competitors" mode skips the idea hunt and goes straight to what competitors' customers complain about and how to win them over.
